Weekend Recap: New Camera!

This weekend was a relaxing and lazy one for me. Adam had a Fantasy Baseball Draft at a friend's house on Saturday afternoon. Chester and I did some snuggling, I finally got around to posting most of our professional wedding photos on facebook, took Chester for a walk, watched "Say Yes to the Dress" on Netflix instant, and worked on our wedding scrapbook. That night Adam and I ordered a pizza from Savoy's (best pizza in the Cities) and watched a movie - "The Other Guys." It had some funny moments, but was mostly just bad and kind of boring...

Sunday was our running errands/shopping day. We went to Best Buy so Adam could get a new video game and I could get the new Bright Eyes CD, "The People's Key," in anticipation of their upcoming concert which Adam is really excited about going to with me (or not). I haven't bought a CD for years, so it felt really strange!

I also looked at digital SLR cameras while we were there. It was rather difficult to get any idea of how a camera feels when it's attached to a giant plastic theft deterrent device and wiring. I picked up one of the Nikon's to look at, and the alarm went off. A Best Buy employee finally came over, and asked which one it was. He reset the alarm, picked it up, and said, "Well it's not doing it now" as he eyed me suspiciously. Then the alarm went off, and I had to try not to smirk. Sweet vindication.

Next, we went to one of Adam's least favorite stores, JoAnn fabrics so I could pick up some more double sided tape and a picture frame. I think JoAnn's has such great deals. It always seems like everything is on sale, and then I had a 25% off sale prices coupon. It must be like Kohl's (not that I really shop there) - you'd be silly to pay full price for something there.

Then it was lunch at Chipotle. My favorite "fast-casual" restaurant. As we sat there, I was telling Adam that Chipotle was one of the things I missed most from home when I was in London for four months. I missed the guac a lot. They really didn't have "Mexican" food over there. It makes sense why they wouldn't, but it's just not something you would even think about missing.

After a quick stop at the Lancome counter at Herberger's, we were off to our main reason for going shopping - National Camera Exchange. I have been wanting a Digital SLR for ages, and Sunday was finally the day to go for it. After comparing the Canon Rebel T3i with the EOS 60D, we opted for the 60D. It wasn't much more expensive, and we both liked the size, feel, and higher burst shooting speed (5.3 vs 3.7) better.

Here's a website that compares the two -

I am not a professional, nor do I want to be, so this camera has more than enough features and was in our price range.

It was really busy in the store, but we had a very helpful salesman. Most of his photography lingo went right over our heads, but we hope to learn more in the upcoming classes we'll be taking. National Camera puts on introductory classes that you can attend for free if you buy a camera from them. Adam and I will both be going. We may have been able to find the 60D cheaper elsewhere, but really appreciated the knowledgeable employees at National Camera, the free classes, and of course we always like to support local businesses.

Adam is just as excited as me about the camera

We're really looking forward to learning all about our new camera. Hopefully we'll be proficient enough with it by the summer for trips.
