Chester's naughty trick this week was hiding under the bed at bedtime. When the bedroom door is open, he loves to race around on the carpet because he gets such good traction, which is followed by scooting under the bed if you try to capture him. The bed is up against the wall, so it's nearly impossible to get him out. I really don't even know how he still fits under there - he does the army crawl. Usually he'll make his way out after a minute or two, and if not, he can always be lured out by his favorite treat. However, that was not the case this time.
On Tuesday evening we were getting ready for bed. After I set the alarm, I bent down to pick Chester up, but he thwarted me and raced into the bedroom. By the time I caught up with him, I spotted his curly little tail disappearing under the bed. He's one speedy little puppy. I wasn't too concerned at first because if you leave the room, he'll usually come out looking for you. So Adam and I turned off the lights in the dining room, shut the basement door loudly, and waited on either side of the bedroom door. Sure enough, he came investigating, but before we could capture him, he went under the bed again. UGH.
Next, Adam got the flashlight out (this is kept in the dresser because it happens so often), got on his hands and knees, and tried to coax Chester out. It wasn't happening. On to Plan C- Adam tried to lure him out with his favorite dried liver treat. Still no luck.
Plan D was Adam loudly leaving the room while I stealthily climbed on top of the bed ready to pounce when he emerged. I think he could hear me breathing, because after 5 minutes of waiting he still was nowhere to be found. As a last resort, Adam got the yard stick used to retrieve Chester's favorite ball from under the couch and used it to gently tap him out. Apparently Chester hated the yardstick touching his front paw, so Adam was able to maneuver him to the side and out with it. Success! After 25 minutes of messing around trying to get Chester out from under the bed, he was finally placed in his kennel to sleep.
I didn't get a photo of this ordeal, but I have one from my phone of him peeking out from under the bed. He may look easy to capture in this one, but if you get too close, he'll scoot right back under.
I'll leave you with one of hyper Chester - note the crazy pug eyes and ears back
That's his favorite toy, elephant. He's onto his second one.
