We are in dire need of more storage space in our kitchen for plates especially. I would love to have my china accessible! So when we were down for Oktoberfest, we took a look at this piece at Boyer's that my dad had scouted for me. It was a little rough and I was no fan of the barn red interior, but the price was right, and I decided I could paint it for our kitchen.
My parents drug it up for us a few weeks ago, and since then, it has sat empty in our kitchen. But no longer! After work on Friday I stopped by Home Depot and picked up some new wood putty. I had discovered the night before that the stuff we had bought for our kitchen project was all dried out. Back at home, we had a quick dinner of spicy Thai noodles, and then I started filling in the different holes and irregularities in the wood with putty. There were a lot more than I thought! Adam said I was a little overzealous, but I wanted it to be perfect before we painted it!
It had to dry overnight, so we relaxed the rest of the evening. Isn't that what Fridays are for?
Since Chester is so adorable in clothes, I busted out this aqua hoodie When I first put it on, he froze in place for about 10 minutes. It was hilarious.

"The pug life chose me"
Saturday morning, I started sanding all the holes. It took forever. Like hours. I thought my hand was going to fall off.
While I sanded, Adam replaced the torsion spring on our garage door. Hooray!!! Just in time for winter. I'm quite excited about this! He's so handy :)
When he came back in, I was still sanding. He decided to be a wonderful husband and helped.
Once the sanding was finally done, we began the priming. We used the oil based primer we had left over from our kitchen cabinet project. It's a sticky pain to work with, but it's better for wood and resists shrinkage. It's harder to work with and a pain for clean-up though.
Due to all the shelves and various surfaces, priming the hutch took basically the whole day.
Chester was a trooper for the most part and spent a lot of time laying on his bed in the gated off hallway to the dining room. He did have a few pathetic whining moments and then some pissed off barking ones too.
We didn't finally get done until around 6. Then we both took showers and cleaned up before heading out for dinner at Meritage.
It was just the two of us, and we had a really nice time. The service was excellent and the food was good. We split the escargot to start. It was deliciously garlicky. Then we both ordered the Braised Shortribs which is their plate du jour for Saturday, and one we'd been looking forward to returning. They had it last winter and Adam adored it. Mine was excellent, but Adam's came and was quite fatty. As in he took 2 bites of meat and then couldn't find anything else to eat that wasn't gristle. He complained, and they were really good about taking it back and bringing him a new one. The only bummer was I was pretty much done eating by the time his new one came out. The chef was very apologetic though and they gave him a little Tuna Tartar taco while he waited. He said it was excellent.
And of course I had to have the Macaron du jour for dessert. This time it was a chocolate berry one. Yum. Adam enjoyed a port for his dessert.
Sunday morning I woke up with a splitting headache. I'm pretty sure it was from the primer the day before. It was quite miserable. I snuggled in bed with Chester and an ice pack for a while, before getting up at 9:30. Luckily I didn't feel like too much of a lump due to DST!
As soon as I got up, we started painting. Again, we used leftover paint from our kitchen project. This was a water based paint so it was much easier to work with. Adam was done with his paint rolling duties by 11:30. Unfortunately for me, my detail painting continued until 1:30.
I had to get a little creative to see some of the shelves I was painting. I discovered a compact mirror was much better than sticking my head in and getting paint on my hair.
And that was just the first coat! We're going to do the second coat tonight. Then I need to decide on a shade of aqua to paint the very back. I'm really excited about this project!
Around 3, we headed over to see Adam's fam and watch the Viking game at their house. As usual, Chester was a maniac and loved running around on the carpet. We made delicious individual pizzas on the smoker, and Robin made this amazing apple tart dessert. It was ridiculously good.
At home, we watched The Walking Dead, and then headed to bed. Who knew painting could be so tiring?
